Great snorkeling and secluded beaches
The Cape Range National Park is situated in Western Australia near Exmouth, on the shores of the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. If offers secluded camping in the dunes, amazing canyons, white beaches and excellent snorkeling and diving just off the beach on Australia’s less well known but nonetheless amazingly beautiful coral reef, the Ningaloo Reef. You can easily spend a few days exploring the park or just floating in its azure waters with the fish beneath you. [more] |

Canyon-walking
There are several walking trails at Cape Range National Park, which will take you through the canyons that have formed in the area over millions of years. A nice one leads through Mandu Gorge. You will follow the trail into the Gorge through higher terrain, which offers nice views over the Gorge itself and glimpses of the ocean, and go back through the bottom of the Gorge for some variety. The longer trial along Charles Knife Road is less rewarding and more strenuous. [more] |

Go with the flow
The most popular spot for snorkeling at Cape Range National Park is at a site called Lakeside. As the reef stretches all the way to the shallow waters here, you only have to wade in and the current will take care of the rest. For a couple of hundred meters of coastline you can simply float along and watch the fish beneath you. The spot is a popular destination for tours from Exmouth, so you may find yourself suddenly surrounded by a group of day-trippers. Wait for the right moment! [more] |

Camping with direct beach-access
The most beautiful campsite with access for conventional vehicles at Cape Range National Park is probably North T-Bone. With only 3 bays, it is the smallest in the park and it is also one of the few that has good shade, something that is rare and precious on Western Australia’s north shores, especially during summer. The large trees offer enough shade to hide away during the hottest hours of the day and you can always cool off in the beautiful azure waters only a few steps beyond the campsite. [more] |

Norwest Airworks
Here's a really good travel tip for you: never go on a scenic flight if you have a hangover. At least take a paper bag with you. Ningaloo Reef and Coral Bay are two areas of astounding beauty situated on the North West Cape in Western Australia. They are areas in which I experienced some of my favourite diving and beaches. But honestly, the best way to really see these areas, and to get an idea of their grandeur, is to go on a scenic flight. Now the other thing you should know about this region is that it is very easy to have a good time at night. The locals, especially the surfers and the divers, seem to like parties, and also seem to like inviting me. Which means that much of the time I either can't remember, or I remember feeling very sick. I remember my scenic flight very well. We took off in the Norwest Airworks single engined plane from Exmouth, and spent an hour flying over the Ningaloo coastline and the Cape Range National Park. The colours were brilliant, with oranges and reds and bright blues and glorious greens. Which is curious, considering that these are exactly the same colours of my breakfast when it came back to revisit me. At only $150, the flight is the best way of seeing the region in all of its splendor. Just don't forget that bag, or the pilot gets very very angry! [more] |

Coral Bay
One of the most spectacular and accessable areas in the Ningaloo Marine Park in Western Australia is Coral Bay, situated in the south of the North West Cape. I have fond memories of my time there (well, the memories that aren't fogged with excessive partying and BBQs and beer, anyway). It is an area of sunshine and friendly people, of excitement and adventure, relaxation and activity. During my stay, I made myself a nest at the Ningaloo Club, a backpackers for the seriously fun loving. At only $25 per night for a dorm bed (there are also twin and double rooms available - some with ensuites), it is a real bargain for the bargain-minded. The swimming pool hosts parties every night, there is alfresco poolside dining, and a wicked bar with even wickeder (hey, I just invented a new word!) drinks. The lovely people at reception will book some of the local activities for you, such as diving, which is awesome. I saw manta rays and sharks while diving in the area. And the surfing is fine too. Ningaloo Reef
The beaches in Ningaloo are so good that, if I was a girl, I would wear the smallest bikini I possibly could. But, as I am not a girl, this would look silly. And it did. But I really don't want to bore you with why I was wearing a yellow bikini on a beach in a marine park on Australia's Coral Coast. Except to say it involved beer. Quite a bit of beer. Ningaloo Reef is part of the North West Cape, and offers all sorts of opportunities to enjoy the sun and the outdoors. Swimming, for example. Diving and snorkelling. Watching wildlife. Getting drunk. The weather there is, quite simply, fantastic. There is no wet season. It is either hot and sunny or really hot and sunny. Occasionally it can be unbelievably hot and sunny. Even in the winter it only gets down to 25 degrees celcius. Getting there is easy. The North West Coastal Highway leads there, and it is possible to fly into the main centre of Exmouth from Perth. There are all types of accommodation options dotted around the region, and other great activities I can recommend are whale watching and fishing. Oh, and did I mention getting drunk? [more] |
