art for all at the AGNSW
Free art? Isn't everything art? Not sure? The AGNSW explores themes such as this weekly hosting guest speaking most Wednesday evenings for what's called 'Art after hours'. All are welcome to attend the speeches held in the large gallery of the building. Seats are available but are occupied quite smartly and there are often times a large crowd standing to the rear. This is quite a reputable gig and most guests have a relationship with or are reflecting on themes from the current exhibition. I have seen Australia politicians, musicians, actors and journalists discussing very insightful things that I can't, for the life of me, remember. The AGNSW also screens a movie on a Wednesday evening immediately after the speech and again on Sunday at 2pm. The movie is held in the downstairs cinema with limited seating and the weekly titles are also tied to the theme of the main exhibition on at the time. Tickets are free but there are no reservations. You can grab you tickets before the speeches though if it is a popular one to ensure you don't miss out. There's schedules online or from the gallery. There's no food or eating allowed there so eat before you come. Live music in the bar competes with the movie timeslot (around 7.15pm) but the cost of drinking and eating there can be high. It's a great. cheap and thought provoking night on the town. [more] |
