Coit Tower, San Francisco

4.0 stars

Coit Tower

I found it interesting that the Coit Tower was designed after the end of a fire hose. An affluent woman admired the firefighters so she had this built. Walk on the paths and you'll get a great view of the city of San Francisco. I did wonder about the woman who built it in those times. I couldn't help but compare it to 911 and how we, again, remembered to thank firefighters. [more ]

Coit Tower

The Coit Tower is definitely a landmark of San Francisco. I visited it on my fourth day there. We learned a lot about its history. It seems it was dedicated to Lillie Coit, a woman that helped the fire-fighters in a great fire of San Francisco. She left a lot of money to the city when she died, and they used that money to build the tower. The tower has an elevator which you can use to climb on top and admire the great view you get of the city. You have to pay for using the elevator, but it’s pretty cheap. I wouldn’t call it a must-see, but if you have time to spare, it’s a nice place to go. [more ]

Coit Tower

Coit Tower is a must see and do when visiting San Francisco. It was constructed on Telegraph Hill in 1933 and now is one of San Francisco’s major tourist attractions.
Many people believe that this tower was constructed to represent a fire hose. This is not true. It was constructed at the request of Lillie Hitchcock Coit as a way to view the beautiful city of San Francisco.

The Coit Tower is approximately 210 feet (64 meters) high. It consists of concrete that is not altered or painted. Inside of the Coit Tower, visits can see more than 25 beautiful murals and paintings on its climbing walls. Two of the most popular murals inside the tower are of the San Francisco Bay and were painted by Jose Moya del Pino. Most of the murals are painted in fresco, which add to the uniqueness of each mural. The murals are available free of charge for public viewing.

At the top of the tower, the guests can get a breathtaking view of the city of San Francisco and the Bay area. Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge are very visible from the top of the tower. The views are beautiful and well worth the long walk up the tower’s stair case.

The Coit Tower is a one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist sites and is definitely a must see while in San Francisco. Visitors of all ages will get a bird’s eye view of the city of San Francisco; and it will be something that they don’t soon forget. [more ]
