Clifton Suspension Bridge
Possibly Brunel’s most well known engineering masterpiece, he sadly didn’t live to see it completed. However, his colleagues decided to complete the project after his death as a memorial to his numerous engineering achievements. At 702 foot long and 250 foot high, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world when opened. Classified as a Grade I listed building, it gracefully spans the Avon Gorge between Clifton and Leigh Woods and is a distinctive landmark in the Bristol area. It’s operated as a fully functional road toll bridge but as a previous reviewer mentioned, whether on the bridge as a pedestrian or viewing it from surrounding vantage points, on a clear day the views are simply quite stunning. The views!
I think the title of this review just about sums this popular tourist attraction up! Brunel's bridge is certainly an impressive attraction and is a must see for any tourist visiting Bristol in my opinion. There is a really fascinating history behind it (which I won't go into here) including the rumour that Shirley Bassey's daughter jumped off this bridge to commit suicide. This is a truly stunning landmark, which isn't so famous that there are millions of tourists flocking there and ruining it. The viewing points are very well located and it is beautifully lit at night. Another tip is to drive around the area and see the different views from different angles. [more] |
