Rathausplatz Fun: Film Festival

 stars
The Rathausplatz is one of the most versatile, beautiful and always interesting squares in all of Vienna. Depending on the time of year, you most likely will be able to enjoy one of the many festivals held annually in the platz.

Every year from the end of June to the beginning of September the Rathausplatz turns into a giant gourmet culinary and movie experience. Workers effectively turn the square into a giant cinema -- complete with High Definition screen -- playing recorded versions of world class opera to ballet to jazz and symphonic concerts. Since the Staatsoper is off-season in July and August, THIS is the place to go for your cultural experiences.

But this is more than just a giant movie theatre, the international "gastronomie" (or gastronomic) pleasures are more than worth the visit -- even if you don't stay or have no interest in the movie of the evening. Thousands and thousands of Viennese and tourists visit the Film Festival just for the food and drinks. With everything from Thai, Greek, Austrian, Spanish, Lebanese, to Asian gourmet cooking -- the culinary choices are an impressive feat of ingenuity and creativeness within themselves.

But my favorite, favorite, favorite part of the Festival are the drinks! Not just any drink either....what I go almost nightly for is called a "bowle" -- which is basically fruit soaked in alcohol. It creates this amazingly potent, syrupy, chunky, fruit cocktail that is absolutely delightful! The Film Festival is the best place to try all flavors as well: cherry, peach, mixed fruit, strawberry, raspberry....it is by far the best place to get your Bowle fix in all of Austria!!

The Gothic Rathaus or Council House

 stars
Another and more modern focus in Vienna, besides Schoenbrunn Palace, is the Rathaus or Council House or City Hall. It is a large Gothic structure with stunning towers and details. There are loads of stone gargoyles on the building, and there are some cool photos that you can get. At the very top of the highest tower is the Rathausmann, which is a symbol of Vienna. It's an iron statue of a standard-bearer. To see it up close, head over to Rathaus Park; there's a replica statue in the park.

As far as city halls go, this one is fairly impressive! There are tours available, but we were there on the wrong day, and we didn't speak German, so we weren't able to see inside. But it's still an impressive building from the outside and it's a good compass point for the city. If we knew where were in relation to the city hall, we were OK.

The building has a very different feel as compared to the palace; it has a feel of fairy tales and mystery to it. [more]

The town hall

 stars
Vienna town hall is probably the main landmark of this beautiful city. It was built in the 19-th century and the diseigners wanted it to be the symbol of this great capital of a big empire and they succeeded. It is a large building in the Neo-gothic style right next to the Parliament building and the University and there is a big garden in front of it. On the day of my visit (October 5) there was also a Children-Fair in this whole garden with clawns and thousands of children. Unfortunately I was there on Sunday and I couldn't enter this beautiful building. [more]

Town Hall

 stars
Vienna's town hall that looks more like a university (a la La
Sorbonne) or palais royal is a sight to behold after a fresh
snowstorm. The centerpiece of Rathausplatz on the Ringstrasse, this is
about as central as you can get and is even worth the guided tour to
see inside the building that showed the Hofburghers who would be boss.
What's not to love with great architecture and a history extended like
the middle finger? [more]

Festivities at Rathaus

 stars
The Rathaus or townhall is in the heart of the city and a hub of cultural activity. Besides being an architecturally beautiful building it, the square at which it sits is always bustling with activity, especially by early evening and night. During the few days that I was in Vienna, there was a film festival at the square for which they had put up a big screen and chairs. But also, all around it were stalls serving a various foods – it was also a food festival. The air around the Rathaus was brimming with activity and excitement. It turned out to be an excellent way to spend the evening. [more]

Rathausplatz Fun: Winter Fairyland

 stars
The Rathausplatz is one of the most versatile, beautiful and always interesting squares in all of Vienna. Depending on the time of year, you most likely will be able to enjoy one of the many festivals held annually in the platz.

From mid-January to the end of February the Rathausplatz transforms itself into a winter dreamland called the Wiener Eistraum (literally: Viennese Ice-dream). In this case, the name says it all....the Rathausplatz becomes a giant ice skating rink -- complete with ice skating track through the woods, two large ice rinks, and a smaller kids rink which is also used for curling matches. Skate rental and locker services are provided along with a little card that allows you access into the ice track.

Of course, what would an event at the Rathaus be without the food selections. At the Eistraum, traditional Austrian winery and beer hall food is served along with hot spiced wines. Gourmet sausages, potato mish-mashes, waffles, pastries, and bread spreads top the list of Austrian cuisine. Beware of skating too soon after all this heavy food! (wink)

Again, yet another impressive, inventive, and entertaining use of the square!

Rathausplatz fun: Christmas Market

 stars
The Rathausplatz is one of the most versatile, beautiful and always interesting squares in all of Vienna. Depending on the time of year, you most likely will be able to enjoy one of the many festivals held annually in the platz.

From mid-November to December 24th you'll find the Rathausplatz all decked out in Christmas attire for the annual Christmas market. Now, there are all kinds of Christmas markets around Vienna, but the Rathausplatz market is by far one of the most beautiful by sheer fact that the towering Rathaus stands trimmed in shimmering Christmas lights for the seasonal celebrations.

The history of Viennese Christmas markets dates back to more than 7 centuries. Traditionally, the vendors are all local artisans offering freshly baked pastries, hand crafted trinkets, textiles, toys, and Christmas decorations. Until this day, the only products you'll find at the Christmas market are genuine Austrian goods, and so well worth the visit to have a real Austrian souvenier.

Of course, I would be remiss if I again did not mention the culinary delights of this particular Festival! The traditional, sugary comfort foods and drinks of winter accompany visitors to the market -- gingerbreads, Kaiserschmarrn (pancake strips with powdered sugar and plums), waffles, sausages and gigantic baked potatoes along with a mug of hot, piping Gluhwein (Austrian cider wines...also in many different flavors!) complete your walk in this winter wonderland.

The Rathaus

 stars
The Rathaus in Vienna is very beautiful architectural achievement. In my art class I learned that the design of this building is neo-Gothic. Basically this has to do with the way the building was designed. The Rathaus is basically in English, city hall. This is where Vienna’s mayor works.

Going further detail to the design of this attraction, one of the most attracting features of the Rathaus design in my opinion is the way the balconies arc. Within the Rathaus are also several terraces where they hold events in the summer when the weather is permitting.

The Rathaus park surrounds this building. This provides a little greenery next to this rather dark building. Though this building is rather dark and looks old, it actually is one of the newer buildings in Vienna. It was built in the late 1800s as a way to replace the old town hall. The successful design is what stands today in Vienna as the central authority of the city where the entire city planning by the beloved mayor takes place. My favorite thing about this building is the knight that stands in front of the building. I am not sure to why there is a knight who is standing there as the building was completed long after the period of knights.

This attraction doesn’t fill up an entire day, but while you are in the center of Vienna it is worth a look. [more]
