Auckland Zoo
Auckland Zoo is located in New Zealand's biggest city, but is a bit off the beaten track. You have to either drive there or take public transport, which can be a bit of a pain. At $18 for adults and $9 for children, it's a bit pricey, but a visit starts off well. The first section involves a tree top walkway through the African plains, followed by the elephant enclosure. Unfortunately it gets a bit confusing after that. After a disappointing walk past the sludge ponds that used to be the hippo pools, you come to the new hippo pools. There are also seals, and an aquarium. The huge aviary is a bit disappointing because it is so huge that the birds all stay miles away from you. The monkey enclosure is really really good, with all sorts of different species, but everything else just seems like it is in bits and pieces. There seems to be no actual plan to the enclosures, and you are forever backtracking to see things you missed. However, as a way of escaping Auckland's busy inner city, it is second to none. [more] |
