Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

5.0 stars

Santa Maria della Salute

Santa Maria della Salute church was constructed in the 17th century near the tip of Dorsoduro, where the Grand Canal merged with St. Mark's Basin. The church has its own history based on a deal with God: while the plague has been killing nearly a third of Venice, the Venetian Senate promised God to build a church to honor the Virgin Mary if He stops the plague. The plague was stopped, perhaps due to a cooler weather, and the church was built combining Venetian Byzantine architecture with domes inspired by St. Peter's in Rome. [more ]

Santa Maria della Salute

Santa Maria della Salute is a lovely church in Venice. It is not as big and complex as the famous San Marco Church, but it’s really worth seeing. When I visited it, there were very few tourists, which kind of made the visit more pleasant. We spent a lot of time inside admiring the lovely decorations and the magnificent altar, which is sculpted. It depicts the Virgin Mary saving Venice in the times of the Plague. The church was built around the 17th century and was built in the Baroque style. I really recommend visiting it. It’s a beauty. [more ]
