In Praise of Hundertwasser - Vienna's Amazing KunstHaus
Having lived in Barcelona, I've seen the cult and wonder of Gaudi, and I respect it - his buildings are so unique and inspiring. Yet the Austrian architect Hunderwasser strikes the exact same chord with me, and I always wonder why he isn't better known. Partly I suppose, he doesn't belong to any one city the way that Gaudi does to Barcelona, and the Kunst Haus seems to be some attempt to tie him to Vienna. The building alone is worth the entrance fee - it's just incredible and so unique. Like Gaudi, there is a huge attention to detail and every angle of every room keeps you guessing. The collection it contains is pretty stunning too, and includes a load of his models as well as an impressive collection of paintings and other artworks. Give Hundertwasser a try! This is a really unusual and unique museum that houses a wonderful collection of paintings that were done by the renegade artist Hundertwasser. His name translates as "one hundred water" and his artwork is as unique as his name. What is so unique about this building is that it was designed by the artist himself, who also freelanced as an architect. His buildings have a strange resembance to a Gaudi creation and this place is no exception. Everything is out of kilter including the floors, which undulate up and down like a funhouse at the amusement park. Hundertwasser's paintings hang on the first and second floor as part of the permanent collection, while travelling shows and exhibition are displayed on the third and fourth floors. The roof has a crown of trees typical of almost all of Hundertwasser's structures. Definately a great place to spend some time. [more] |
