Castro Theatre, San Francisco

Haven of Old School Cinema Charm

I don't know where to start with describing how awesome the Castro Theatre is.I guess it's like stepping back into the era when cinema going was at its peak. It only has one giant screen, complete with old school balcony, and the 1920s decor is mind blowing - the enormous hanging lamp being my personal favourite touch. The whole place is decorated in a very glamorous way, and an attention to detail which people have clearly worked hard to protect over the years. Even the popcorn machine is an antique, and watching it (not to mention smelling it) is completely hypnotic. Of course, a beautiful cinema is worthless without decent films to watch in it, and the Castro seems to have a pretty varied and fascinating range of films, not to mention a semingly endless number of festivals.

The Castro is a very rare thing - a sanctuary for people that really care about film and want to meet other people who do. If you like film, especially classical Hollywood, you don't have a choice - you have to go! [more ]
