Neue Wache - one of many memorials in Berlin
The Neue Wache has a vast (and sort of ironic) history. It is situated on Unter Den Linden near Museum Island and was first the gaurd house for the Prussian Military. When the monarchy was no longer around the building was changed into a "Memorial for the Fallen of the War." which is a kind of broad context, but meant the German people. Then under the Soviet rule the memorial was changed again to a "Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism" (!). At this stage the remains of an unknown German soldier and of a concentration camp were placed under the paving inside the building. This may seem odd to some and there was some contraversy, however they saw the German soldiers as victims of war as they were brain washed into fighting. An eternal flame was also added to the centre of the building. Finally, during reunification the memorial was changed once again to the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny." The GDR eternal flame was removed and replaced with a larger version of Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture Mother with her Dead Son. Kollwitz lost her son to WWI and her Grandson to WW2. The idea I like the best of the memorial is that the statue is placed under a round open hole in the roof of the building. When it snows or rains the statue is exposed to the weather. Although you may not go into the building, just walk past as many do, it makes you realise that no matter what is going on in the outside world the statue inside is going through the same. The events of war have taken place and should be remembered. [more] |

Neue Wache
The Neue Wache (New Guardhouse) has been dedicated as Germany’s central war memorial. However, originally it had been built back in 1818 as a Prussian War Memorial. It was heavily damaged in World War II and rebuilt by the East German government as a memorial for the victims of militarism and fascism. Today, if you were just walking down the street, you might not even notice it as it is a smallish classical building right on Unter den Linden. Inside you will find an enlarged replica of Kathe Kollwitz’s sculpture “Mother with her dead son.” I didn’t find this memorial particularly moving, however, it only takes a minute to have a look, read the sign, and take note. We visited this on a tour, so if you do a tour, you can probably mark this off your list. [more] |
