The Fuggerei

 stars
The Fuggerei is, if nothing else, fun to say. In fact, I find it difficult to visit Augsburg without talking quite a lot about the Fuggers. In 1516 the Fugger family set up what was to be the oldest social housing project. It became 104 homes for poor, catholic, Bavarians. The rent, supposedly, hasn’t gone up either. The current rent is €1 a year. What you can see on a visit to the Fuggerei, is a series of apartment houses with one open to the public as a museum. It’s fairly cheap to visit the museum, set up as it was when the Fuggerei opened, so I recommend taking the 15 minutes to do so. The Fuggerei is located just 5 minutes walk from the town hall and the main square. [more]
