Out of a fairy tale
I am not sure how to define the Fisherman’s bastion – a fortress, a terrace or a system of towers. It is an architectural structure as if out of a fairy tale consisting of towers, terraces, arches and stairways. It offers fantastic panorama of the Danube and the city and great settings for photos. I took about 50 of them and then I lost all of them when my computer crashed. It would be a very romantic spot, if you manage to pick a quiet day (not really sure if these exist, as it is a very popular attraction). I would rate the Bastion as my top attraction in Budapest. Living History
One of the reasons why I love Budapest so much is because of the city's multi-layered history. It has been under the control of Turks, Hapsburgs, Communists, and Nazis (to name but a few) and bears the marks of each culture that has helped to shape Budapest (and Hungary on the whole) into the city it is today. Baths, memorials, bridges, palaces, churches all contribute to the living history of the city; it's a wonder so many of these buildings are still used. The Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya; near Matthias Church in Buda) no longer serves as an area for a local fish market (that is also non-existent); however it is at the root of Hungarian history. Comprised of seven towers—one for each of the Magyar tribes that formed Budapest (and Hungary) in 1000—is impressive, flowing, stark, and white. In fact, it bears a passing resemblance to Sacre Coeur in Paris. While Fisherman's Bastion was never a church, it was still fiercely defended during Budapest's history as a national treasure. The flowing staircases give it the feel of being a castle in the sky, almost of another world. While it does not have the ornate flourishes of the other buildings in the castle district, it is in my opinion the most beautiful. The views of the Danube and Pest from this fortress help to understand why more than a millennium of defending Budapest has been worth it. For a few forints, you can hike to the top of the tallest tower, but the free parts of the Bastion are all you need here. The best view is at night, when the Chain Bridge is alit and the city lights reflect off the waters. (It was romantic enough for one young Hungarian to propose to his girlfriend the night we were there.) The real romance here, however, with the city. [more] |

Where to go in Budapest: Fishermen's Bastion (Halászbástya)
In summer, it is so much to say is the hardest time to move freely when you are visiting Fishermen’s Bastion because there can gather more than 10.000 visitors easily; and usually, they come with a group, so imagine if a bus of a group consists 30 people and there usually not just one or two busses arriving to the place but up to 10 at least; and they are not just local tourists or neighboring European countries but even from Japan, US, Hong Kong, Chili, Indonesia, Australia, and Middle East!, so in summer, Fishermen’s Bastion is like a huge “reunion” of multicultural theme ;) Built in the form of castle-like towers, Fishermen’s Bastion really is a tourist-magnet and the location is just perfect, up on a higher ground where you can see the Danube, downtown Budapest across the river, the Parliament Building, the building of Hungarian Scientific Academy, the Chain Bridge and plenty more; and when the sky is clear and blue, the view from up there is very memorable. Often, a couple of street musician would play a song or two for the visitors. While it is free of charge to wonder at the Fishermen’s Bastion, you are required to pay for entrance ticket if you’d like to climb up the stairs to reach the highest point of the towers; and in summer? The queue is freaking crazy! [more] |

Fisherman’s Bastion
Fisherman’s Bastion is not actually a fortress because it never really served its purpose. It was initially built on the remains of an 18th century castle, in order to replace an old stronghold. It was built between 1895 and 1902. I saw pictures of this impressive building and had the impression someone drew it on paper, and that is was not real. I had the same feeling when I first saw it. It does look strong, with only two towers but it is surely enough very imposing. The building is neo-gothic and has two important towers. One of them faces the Danube. The place does not look friendly or warm but it is something one can admire. The inside is spectacular too, I was particularly impressed by the marble stairway though it was very cold, and I stayed and explored every corner of the Fisherman’s Bastion including the courtyard. Fisherman's bastion
Fisherman's bastion is located at I. Buda Castle District (take M2 to Moszkva tér and then bus number 16.) Another pretty sight in itself, but also offering beautiful views across the river to the Parliament and Pest. Fisherman's bastion was designed by Schluek and it has 7 towers. 7 towers symbolize the 7 Hungarian tribes that made up the nation all those centuries ago. Now the first few times I went to Budapest you could walk about unattended, but the last time I have visited Budapest I was a bit surprised to see you had to pay the admission fee to climb up. I don’t know if that is still the case, however it is worth it for the view alone (although if you are on the budget just head over to the Buda castle you can enjoy the view from there as well).
