A Rocky Wonder

Known as Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg, this cathedral is simply a marvel in rock springing out of the pavement as you turn the corner to the little elderly houses described in the previous review.

It was actually the first Gothic Cathedral (although it has some Romanesque parts) I saw during my 10-days trip in France. This detail contributed to my amazement,,, I was simply amazed by it's height and complexity, as the visual shock was even bigger - being fond of the Gothic. I stood about half an hour staring only at the Gothic ornaments at the entrance, placed in an broken arch shape- characteristic to its architecture. the Cathedral is famous for the astronomical clock it holds within, a unique gigantic jewel of this kind. (When you're getting there, please notice the centered moon, a beautiful sphere on a painted night sky....it's incredible !) [more]

Sunday Service at the Cathedral

Was in Strasbourg and the first thing I had to visit was the Cathedral. It's right smack in the middle of the square so it's impossible to miss. The outside's gothic sculptures are pretty intense--definitely to large and grand to capture with an ordinary camera.

I've actually been here twice but each time I visit something always seems new. I've also even attended service there in French--attended by a very international community of church-goers. Maybe it's because Strasbourg has a big global community with its schools and as the seat of the European Commission and other international organizations right in its backyard. [more]

The Cathedral of Strasbourg is probably the most magnificent Gothik cathedral I have ever seen - I can compare to it only the cathedrals in Cologne and Ulm, but I liked this one more. It is very heavily decorated with all typical Gothic elements. Its only tower is asymmetrically situated on the right side of the facade, it happened that way, because when planning the cathedral the architects wanted to build a second tower, but they couldn't because of lack of money or some other reason. It is possible to climb up to the place where this second tower would have been and it is quite high, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed to climb up the existing tower. Nevertheless, the view from the platform on the top of the cathedral was really nice and satisfying, so there was no place for regret that we are not allowed to go higher.
The interior of the Cathedral is quite dark, the colorful windows let only little light inside. [more]

The Notre Dame Cathedral is definitely a must see. This cathedral is a great piece of Gothic architecture. This is not the same cathedral as the one as the book the hunchback of Notre Dame but it is still an impressive building. It even held the world record for world’s tallest building for over 200 years. The entire church is extremely impressive. It is impressive. Inside is one of the largest clocks of the world. As a gothic church there are of course also gargoyles looking over the church. The stain glass windows in the building are beautifully decorated as well as designed. This building looms over the rest of the buildings in the city.

I found this building extremely useful place for meeting up with my friends during the day and as a great way to determine your direction in the city. Most churches in Europe are impressive, but this is one of the best.

This church is open during most times during the day except for a short time during lunch. During the day it is possible to go up a platform to get a great view of Strasbourg. From here it is also possible to see Offenburg located just on the other side of the border between France and Germany. [more]
