Judisches Muesum
More than menorahs and mezuzas, Vienna's Jewish Museum gives you a valuable perspective on Jewish history. Austria–and its capital city in particular–has had a longstanding and interesting history with its Jewish population, to say the least. Many of its intelligentsia and artistic circles were members of the tribe, and it was a huge blow when they either took off for the US or passed in concentration camps. As a result, the Judisches Museum Wien is an appropriate tribute to the cultural influence the Jews had on their homeland. We saw one of their current exhibitions and one of their permanent fixtures, both of which show two of the 20th Century's greatest artists (in their respective fields)–Erich Korngold and Marc Chagall. Along with his father, the venerable and often feared musical critic Julius Korngold, Erich Korngold represented the longstanding history of Viennese musical genius (Amadeus? What?) and was often considered the next Mahler and the next Mozart. He wrote several groundbreaking operas (check out Die Tote Stadt, his most popular work) but moved to Hollywood right before the Anschluss and wound up becoming one of Hollywood's greatest composers (he was a favorite for Errol Flynn movies). And Chagall's work–some of which permanently on display here–is not just a great example of Jewish art. but also a representation of last century's art on the whole. There is however, in a nod to Elie Wiesel, a persistence of memory here. You'll see a lot of artifacts preserved from the destruction of Jewish homes and synagogues during the days of World War II, including pieces from some famous cats like Sigmund Freud. [more] |
