Saint Andrews
As I drove along the green mountains and hills of Scotland, I expected that I would be following these natural country roads for days at a time, occasionally spotting a house or two along the way. This thought was true, at least, until I passed a sign saying I was nearing St. Andrews, and all of that changed. I am not a fan of St. Andrews anymore than I am a fan of any golf town. The first time I flew into Japan, I was disgusted to see so many lush forests and rivers destroyed to make room for another sports field that would be used by only a small amount of the population. Do not get me wrong, I appreciate golf as a sport, but when you are looking to explore a place that has been vastly untouched by nature, it is always a disappointment to find sand traps and greens instead of mountains and streams. St. Andrews is by the ocean, and features a lovely small-town feel that is as welcome as any other town in Scotland. Plenty of pubs with delicious haggis and inexpensive bed and breakfasts exist, but there are many other towns like this one, and because St. Andrews is so famous for its golf, there were more tourists in the area than anywhere else in Scotland (except Glasgow, but that is another world) when I visited. Hotels and fancy restaurants are all overpriced and in demand, causing me to prefer Edinburgh or Aberdeen for places to stay any day of the week. Now of course there is a lot of history worth seeing in St. Andrews, from towers to churches to castles, but I did not find it necessary to stay here for longer than a day or so. If you like golf, visit this place immediately. If not, it’s worth stopping by at some point. It is still in Scotland, and it is still a lovely town. [more] |
