The grand Marienplatz in Munich and it's architectural gems

 stars
In the centre of Munich is the grand Marienplatz, an open space filled with some of Munich's important historical buildings. It is where I started my tour of the city simply because it is a good orientation point for visiting other attractions in the area, and straight away I was thrilled with all the amazing things that I could see. To get here you can take the U-Bahn via 'Sendlinger Tor', or just take a 10-15 minute walk down 'Bayerstrasse' and through the gate at 'Karlsplatz'.

The building that dominates the square from the north is the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) on which building began in 1867. On the east-side is the Altes Rathaus, which actually looks a little bit newer than the old one, but it's hard to explain why! Perhaps they take more pride and care of the older building in order to keep it in good condition as it ages! Right in the centre of Marienplatz is the Mariensäule which is a type of column with a golden Virgin Mary on top. Marienplatz is also overlooked by the two spires of the Frauenkirche as well as the spire of Peterskirche, which I also added to my itinerary since they were so close by.

There were a lot of people loitering around Marienplatz just before 12 noon - and I know this because I was one of them! Both they and I were waiting for the Glockenspiel to start playing in the tower of the Neues Rathaus. It was good to see and hear, but nevertheless I wouldn't recommend taking any special journey for it, but it's just ok if you happen to be in the area at the time. If you need any info on the city, there is also a Tourist Information point on the ground floor at the Neues Rathaus. [more ]

If you decide to travel to Munich, make sure to check out the Marienplatz. In my opinion the Marienplatz is the most interesting place in Munich. There you can find the fascinating Glockenspeil, which makes its appearence every day at five pm and twelve pm. The Marienplatz also has many great resteraunts with authentic German food and great beer. The nice thing about the resteraunts in the Marienplatz is that you can sit outside and watch the people go by and enjoy your beer, and you can also watch the Glockenspeil come out. When traveling to Munich don’t forget to bring your camera and also be ready to sample some great food and beer. [more ]

Marienplatz is part of the central area of Munich. That is where you always get to see street artists, artesan stands and the famous “Glockenspiel”, which can only be seen twice a day, at 11 am and 12 pm. This show is made by some sculptures that come out of the new townhall and dance according to the sounds made by the bells. The plaza is always very crowded at that time of the day, because everybody wants to see the “Glockenspiel”. Well, I can’t say I didn’t like it, but it’s definitely not one of the things I most liked in Munich. It may be a lot more interesting for children. [more ]
