Bremer Roland (statue of Roland), the knight of Charlemagne
Roland was a city protector in Bremen, and as a remembrance the people from Bremen built a statue for him in 1404 and I heard this version from our Bremer friend. It is not small, but about 5 meter height facing to the Cathedral. It is a symbol of a trading rights and freedom. The statue of Roland and the together with the Rathaus (City Hall) are UNESCO World Heritage sites. I visited Bremen in winter and it was very crowded, everybody wanted to take pictures with Roland. Some even try to touch the statue although there is a fence around it. The people in Bremen believe that Roland will always keep watching the city that’s why he is standing and watching over it.
