Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri
The Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri is quite possibly the weirdest church I’ve ever seen. Built out of part of the Baths of Diocletian, Michelangelo was responsible for much of what you see, so the church itself dates from 1563 to 1566. The façade is just part of the baths so that the church looks like ruins. The meridian line across the center of the church is very odd as well, it was built as a type of calendar for Pope Clement XI. Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri is located just a short walk from the train station, completely around the block from the entrance of the rest of the baths of Diocletian. [more] |
