Wild Animals at the Jardin de Plantes
My last morning in Paris I began by walking south from the 18th arrondissement, toward the Seine. I had a vague intention to visit the Louvre, or perhaps to sniff out some less intuitive attraction on the other side of the river. Drifting east as I strolled, I soon found myself before L'Institut du Monde Arabe. Checking my map, I saw a large teal rectangle representing the Jardin de Plantes right next door. As I strolled along Quai Saint Bernard toward the Jardin gate, I suddenly noticed a trio of ostriches to my immediate right. "Why, those aren't plantes," I thought... The main entrance to the Jardin de Plantes is large and impressive, but fortunately no tariff is collected there. One is free to roam the neat rows of plants from all parts of the world, which are arranged by themes like 'alpine' or 'tropical'. While wandering, I passed several people jogging circuits about the paths, and one lady practicing yoga. It was pleasant and airy, but being November most the plants were not at their liveliest, and for some reason the paleontology building beside the gardens (recognizable from the giant stegasaurus out front) was not open. The adjacent menagerie, however, was, and for a reasonable 7 euros I was able to spend the rest of the afternoon watching wallabys, eyeing orangutans, and teasing tigers (leopards, actually).
