Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, Barcelona

4.0 stars

Carrer del Bisbe Irurita

A very charming street, called Carrer del Bisbe Irurita runs alongside the cathedral in the Barri Gòtic. This narrow street has been designated for pedestrian traffic only, making it a nice place to walk. There is a beautiful archway/walkway that crosses it. I thought it made for a nice photo opportunity. Also near the cathedral at the end of the Carrer del Bisbe Irurita you can find the bottom parts of the rounded Roman towers and part of the north-west wall of the Casa de l'Ardiaca was part of the Roman wall. There is so much history to be found near the cathedral that I found this whole area beautiful and fascinating. [more ]

Catedral de la Santa Creu

This was one of the first places I visited in Barcelona. Having just arrived, I went to the Plaça Catalunya to take in the architectural style in this area and get my first close look at the city. I then walked down to the cathedral to view the architectural style of Barcelona's cathedral. This beautiful gothic cathedral stands in the center of the (surprise!) Bari Gòtic (Gothic district).

The cathedral has a rather long and fascinating history. There had been a basilica built here as early as 343 A.D. during the Roman times, but it was destroyed by the Moors. A Roman cathedral was built on the same site between 1046 and 1058. Construction of the current gothic cathedral began in 1298. Construction progressed slowly (due to civil wars and the black plague). The façade that is currently visible was designed in 1408, but not built until 1889. The entire project was not finished until 1913, when the spire was added.

In spite of the centuries it took to complete it, they seem to have kept true to the Gothic style of this cathedral and what you see is a beautiful cathedral formed out of many years of dedication to completing it.

If planning to visit here, you should be aware that this cathedral is sometimes called by different names. While in Barcelona, I simply heard it referred to as "la catedral." In reading through literature, however, I have found it referenced as "La Catedral de Santa Eulalia," "La Catedral de la Santa Creu," "La Catedral de Barcelona," and "La Seu." [more ]

The Cathedral

Barcelona cathedral is a nice old Gothic cathedral in the old center (Barri Gothic district) of Barcelona. It is a great church, but actually it is currently being renovated so one can’t see much of the façade and they actually charge you 5 euros to enter the cathedral, which in my opinion is too much. I generally dislike being charged money for entering cathedrals and this one is not exception of the rule. And considering the fact that it is neither unique nor especially beautiful this 5 euros are too much for entering a church being under heavy construction works. (of course that doesn’t apply for Sagrada Familia at all; it is always worth visiting for any sum) [more ]

Cathedral in the Gothic quarter is located at Pla de la Seu.

Another imposing building the work on the cathedral started in 13th century, however it was not finished until 6 centuries later. The church was here as early as 4th century, but the only thing that remains today is the baptistery. The oldest part of the cathedral is the doorway of Sant Iu, while the façade is the latest addition and dates back to 19th century. Check out the high altar, as well as the pulpit and the tower that dates back to 15th century, as well as doorway to the cloisters and the crypt of Santa Eulŕlia.

Opening hours are daily from 8:00am until 1:15pm and from 4:30pm until 7:30pm. [more ]
