Dahab means gold in Arabic. It is said that this name was given by the Bedouins, who likened the shimmering sands to gold dust. If you are after total rest and relaxation, holidays in Dahab are just for you. With its sleepy, relaxed way of life, this little town attracts visitors from all around the World. Located approximately 100km northwest of Sharm El-Sheikh, is still considered to be one of South Sinai's most treasured diving destinations swarmed by tourists. It has excellent hotel accommodations, but also affords less expensive housing in the village, or camping. It is famous for its golden beaches and deceptively deep diving sites, such as the Blue Hole (a breathtaking 200-foot circular drop in the ocean floor is sure to entice), the Canyon and the Lighthouse. The scuba diving and snorkeling are very good, with many reefs immediately adjacent to waterfront hotels. Dahab is world-renowned for its windsurfing. Reliable winds provide superb flat-water conditions inside Dahab's sand spit. There are camel, horse, jeep and quad bike safaris. These are either parallel to the shoreline, up one of the several valleys or around the township. One of the main attractions of Dahab is the unique on-the-ground restaurants, a mixture of Hippie and Bedouin styles developed over several decades. Large cushions and low tables are placed next to the sea, and decorated with colorful cloths. Most of these restaurants have fish stalls in front, where you can pick the fish of your choice and have it prepared according to your wishes. The menus are delicious, quite affordable, but a bit above the price level of the average Egyptian restaurant. A two hour drive is sufficient to reach Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery; ascents to view sunrise and sunset are popular. Some of the jeep safaris starting from Sharm El-Sheikh have a 1-2 hours long relaxation break on the beach of the town. [more ]
