Weinheim - Burg Windeck
Burg Windeck castle is the first of the two castles you’ll reach after you leave the centre of Weinheim and travel up the mountain. It’s approximately five minutes journey by car and a 30 minute hike on foot but be warned – the road up is quite steep.
Once you reach the castle there’s an information board (German & English) that details the history of the castle from when it was built in the 12th century to its partial destruction by the French Army in the 17th century, plus subsequent later excavations/renovations.
The parts of the castle that are still standing include the tower (which you can climb up from the inside) and a restaurant and a traditional beer garden. The beer garden is a sun trap in summer and a perfect place to while away a few hours whilst gazing out over Weinheim. The menu is traditional German but the prices weren’t any more expensive than the town centre and the serving staff were helpful and friendly. [more ]
