A working church with all the trimmings
I was struck, when visiting this church, that it, like so many in the centre of Vienna, was most definitely a church in use and tourism was merely a side venture. That's a reason to visit Vienna, period, as it is much more than a tourist museum but is thriving in all areas. But it is certainly a reason to visit the Peterskirche, which feels more like a public forum than the others, possibly as a result of its positioning on an island where several streets meet. It's also the HQ of Opus Dei, if you're looking for hints of the daVinci-licious. Don't let me make you think it comes across as purely a functional church. It has a very charming interior with all the Baroque trimmings one would expect. It has a lively (and shiny) depiction of St John of Nepomuk's rather unceremonious dumping into the Vltava River in Prague by his contemporaries, and a very fine dome. I recommend visiting at a sunny point of the day, however - I went late afternoon on a summer day and was surprised by how dark it was inside. [more] |

Peterskirche
There has been a church or Christian temple on this site since the fourth century; and Peterskirche (completed in the early 18th Century) has had the longest lease so far on the space. If you're a fan of the baroque, don't miss this green-domed cathedral on the Innere Stadt, miraculously and impressively preserved. If you're a Dan Brown devotee, this has also been linked to Opus Dei. [more] |
