Moeraki Boulders, Hillgrove

4.0 stars

Barmy Boulders

The Moeraki boulders and a highly surreal collection of surprisingly spherical boulders scattered about (and half buried in) Koekohe beach between the towns of Moeraki and Hampden. Some of the boulders are over two meters in diameter and look like an abandoned game of giant marbles!

You can park up close to the beach and wander down for free and they make a photo opportunity particularly at sunrise and sunset.

Similar boulders are also found to the south of Moeraki and on the north island at Hokianga Harbour but these are less impressive and dramatic. [more ]
