Figarohaus
What is Vienna without a little Mozart—and vice versa? Mozart lived in this apartment on Domgasse/Schulerstrasse between 1784 and 1787 (four years before his death), during which time he wrote The Marriage of Figaro (hence the name). I'm a sucker for preserved homes such as this, especially homes during prolific and happy times for their owners. There is a pretty impressive collection of manuscripts and other memorabilia here (although the good stuff is all in Salzburg), and is a fun stop while lolling around Stephansdom. [more] |

The Mozart House
The Mozart House, although it sounds like something you probably want to visit, is most likely not what you are thinking. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart never lived in Augsburg; he lived in Augsburg, Munich, and Vienna, but not Augsburg. What you have here is a house that Leopold Mozart (W.A. Mozart’s father) was born in. Leopold Mozart was of course an accomplished composer and musician him self, however his greatest achievement was bringing up the genius which his son became. The Mozart house in Augsburg is a memorial and museum which holds some contemporary documents of the Mozart family. If you’ve been to W.A. Mozart’s houses in Salzburg and Vienna and are still interested, then go here…but I wouldn’t say it’s a must see. [more] |
