Hostel high up on the mountain

The hostel on mount Chirripó is located about four kilometers from the actual summit. This means, that you can do the rest of the trip up the mountain without luggage, which is a huge help! The hostel itself is a rugged lodge with dorm beds that sleeps up to 60 people. It small, cozy rooms, has a large common room with big wooden tables and a well-equipped kitchen. You cannot by food up here except small snacks, such as nuts and soda, so make sure to bring your own, you will be hungry! Extra blankets are available for rent, and it does get really cold up there. (The cold showers weren't fun!) [more ]

Costa Rica's hightest mountain

Climbing the Cerro Chirripó, with 3,819 meters the highest mountain in Costa Rica, was one of hardest and most rewarding experiences in my life. If the weather is good, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the caribbean from the top. The 16 km ascent is not particularly hard, but I found it was extremely difficult because of the high altitude. So an early start might be recommended. Get your National Park Pass and hostel reservation (there is a hostel close to the summit and although it is possbile to go up and down in the same day if you're really fit, I would not recommend it) the day before, as the National Park office doesn't open until eight o'clock. Basecamp for Mount Chirripó

If you're planning to climb Mount Chirripó, your are well-advised to base yourself in one of the small family-run guesthouses on the base of the mountain. Let the owners know that you're planning to leave early in the morning and they are very likely get up with you and prepare breakfast. When I was there we could leave our luggage in the guesthouse until we came back and the lady even did our laundry for us for a small fee. After coming back down from the mountain a couple of small bars and restaurants offer a place to rest, warm food and a drink, which is what you will be craving. [more ]
