Mosta Dome
Malta is proud of Mosta Dome. It's the 5th biggest dome in the world, and dominates the oxymoronic Rotunda Square in which it stands. It is a striking building, but only in its simplicity. The ranks of saints' statues standing outside are stark and unadorned, the sandstone from which it's made is typically tawny, and the close proximity of the surrounding buildings adds to its domineering presence. Inside, the walls are decorated with gilt-edged religious paintings, in traditional catholic style, and the great space within gives the church an airy feel. One of the most popular attractions is a German shell, which came down through the roof during the second world war, bounced off the floor and walls, and failed to detonate. It's now displayed beneath an image of the Virgin spreading her hands protectively over Mosta Dome. A slightly more tawdry side of the experience is the gift shop selling tat by the bucketload, including terrifying glow-in-the-dark crucifixes. [more] |
