Tihany Abbey
There are plenty touristic places to check out while in Tihany, from the museums, the restaurants, the souvenirs area, to historical buildings and houses; however, the most touristic magnet of Tihany would be the church which some parts of it were once was a fortress; this church is known as the Tihany Abbey. The twin church’ towers can be seen in fairly far distance and for those who don’t know about this church, they definitely cause some curiosity and eagerness to cross the Lake Balaton to go up to Tihany and check out the elegant church. The church has magnificent view and fairly big pathways with white sandy granules; pretty lovely. Beside the church itself, there are quite a few of statues just outside the church, a souvenir shop right next to the church, Spring Cone of Tihany (it is not always open for public though), museum room, and of course there are interesting areas to explore inside the abbey itself (the crypt, gallery, café area, etc). Definitely put Tihany and the Abbey (obviously) on your next holiday’s list, I am sure you will like it indeed; I cannot remember well for the entrance ticket, but I believe it was somewhere around 800 Forint. The Abbots of Tihany (Tihanyi apatok)
Visitors are able to go down to the lower part of the Tihany Abbey; by climbing down the stairs and turning to your left side; you will be walking through a tunnel-like area where you will find name plaques nailed to the wall; those name plaques are list of the Abbots of Tihany (Tihanyi apatok) and there are more than 40 plaques up on the wall of the tunnel-like pathways; if you are a Hungarian, those names would likely sound familiar to you but if you are not, you might find the names are easy to pronounce but actually, some consonants and vocals are not pronounced as simple as the English letter would be. All of the Abbots of Tihany whose names are up on the wall obviously are not today’s Abbots so don’t be surprised when you see the year of births and the year of deaths are dated more than hundreds of years ago (like around 1300ish).
