Benedictine Convent
Benedictine Convent is located at Nonnberg. The origins of this particular convent are somewhat obscure, but it is considered that the convent was founded around 700 thus making it one of the oldest surviving convents in the world. In 13th century the abbess was given the rank of a bishop which made her equal with the abbots of St. Peter. The church is also worth checking out as it is done in a splendid Gothic style with wonderful frescos dating back to 13th century. But what might be of interest to you (even if you do not want to check out the church) is that this was where Fraulein Maria was preparing to take her vows in “Sound of Music”. Well worth checking out in my opinion. Opening hours are daily from 7:00am until dusk (during the summer months opening hours are until7:00pm). [more] |
