Aula Palatina at Kirche zum Erloecher (Konstantin Basilika)

They used about 1.5 millions of bricks to build Konstantin Basilika. Emperor Constantine’s throne room in Trier is a classic brick structure, under pinned by a cast Roman concrete of 4 meter. Constatine the Great built this Basilica in 340 AD.

The original Basilica was actually very huge, but time after time, it was getting old and then destroyed. And then they re-built it again with the old materials from the ruins. So, if you pay a very close attention to the bricks, they are all in different sizes. They gathered the very small pieces and made it big pieces and then arranged them again.

I personally like the lights on the ceiling. There are more than 30 lights hanging from the ceiling until half of the building. On the left side of wall, they provide some pictures and description about Konstantin Basilika from when they built it until now in German, English and French.

Constantine's Basilica

This big and extremely old building is situated in the centre of Trier, just next to the Kurfuersliches Palais. I was amazed to learn, that the building is really from the 4-th century AD and is in fact called basilica in the old meaning of the word - a place where the Emperor ruled and not in the modern meaning, where basilica means church. So this was the place form where the first Christian Roman emperor Constantine ruled his empire (I was also surprised to learn, that he really stayed in Trier most of the time, and not in Rome and Constantinopole, at least in his earlier years) The building construction is very simple, without any decorations in pure Roman style. The interior is even simpler - I just entered this big hall, and there was nothing inside. Although today the basilica is really used as a church it lacks almost any kind of typical church decoration. This simplicity in forms and decorations , combined with its old age and great size make the basilica a really magnificent place. [more]
