The Church of Saint Afra
The Church of Saint Afra stands at the highest point of the city of Augsburg. It is at the end of Maximilianstrasse and is probably the most impressive church in town being comparable to the cathedral on the opposite side of town. It was built on the site of the Roman cemetery where St. Afra was martyred in 304 AD. The original late gothic structure was begun in 1467. There are three saints buried here, Saints Ulrich, Afra, and Simpert. Saints Ulrich and Afra are in the crypt, while saint Simpert is in the most elaborate side chapel. To me, this church is plain for a gothic church, but this is normal for southern Germany. [more] |

The Church of Saint Ulrich
The Church of Saint Ulrich is a separate church from the church of St. Afra, yet it is literally connected. In fact, the two churches are different religions. Because of this fact, I like to think this is fairly unique and worth seeing for that reason alone. The church of St. Afra is the main church and Saint Ulrich is more of a side church that was just built on to the western edge. This church is no where near as impressive as others in town, yet since you are probably going to the church of saint Afra anyways, it’s worth your 5 minutes to walk around to the Lutheran church of Saint Ulrich right next door. These churches are located right at the end of Maximilianstrasse. [more] |
