Putting a Face on our History
One of the Smithsonian’s free museums, the National Portrait Gallery is exactly what it claims to be: a gallery of portraits. From Pocahontas to Elvis to George W Bush, the face of iconic and influential Americans are on display here. Among these celebrities are the faces of lesser-known people who influenced the development of this country in one way or another. I thought the Portrait Gallery is a great way to put a face to the names I had heard of and read about so many times. I especially liked the presidential portraits for that reason. There is a huge exhibit devoted to faces from 1600-1900, but my favorite section was the ‘20th Century American’ exhibition. I preferred it just because there was a wider range of styles among the portraits than in the older, more historic paintings, which I found engaging. It’s amazing how much of a person can be captured in a painting, especially when the artist gets to be stylistically creative. [more] |
