Cathedral of St. Mary (Dom St. Maria)
Cathedral of St. Mary (Dom St. Maria) is, although in my opinion not the most interesting church in Augsburg, still worth visiting if you like gothic churches. It’s also one of the oldest churches in the area, parts of it being from the 9th century, where as other parts are from the 11th century. The cathedral isn’t directly downtown, but at the same time it only takes you 10 minutes to get there from the town hall, which is the center. The cathedral is dark and feels very much out of step with most churches from the area. It is an extremely large cathedral, especially if you consider the parts that are now occupied by the cathedral museum. Of the cathedrals in Bavaria, I believe this to be one of the most impressive. One other thing to note is that this church claims to have the oldest stained glass in the world, it might be worth going to just for that. [more] |
