Stockholm Cathedral

 stars
In Gamla Stan you can find the lovely and beautiful Stockholm Cathedral. The Cathedral dates back to the 13th century. It's the oldest church in the city and literally translated, the name Storkyrkan means "The Great Church". This is the church where all the royal functions take place: weddings, coronations, etc.

The church is near the Royal Palace. There is a large clock tower at the top of the church. The architecture is a modified Gothic style and it's made of pale brick.

Inside, the cathedral ceiling soars (as cathedral ceilings are wont to do). There are loads of beautiful stained glass windows. One of the most famous things about the cathedral is the large and ornate carved statue of St. George and the Dragon. The statue is a symbol of Stockholm. It's made of oak and gold. It's very beautiful and incredibly detailed. We weren't sure we'd have time to go into the cathedral, but I'm glad that we made time for it! [more ]
