Death Valley – endless desert landscape 4 stars
Travel Tip: Death Valley
Part of Topic Touring Western USA - California

On our tour through western USA we drove trough the Death Valley. Although this is a very warm and dry National Park, you can see wonderful desert and rock landscapes. Also worth seeing are the salt lakes around the area. Many good viewpoints are a little off the normal roads, so you should bring... [more]

Ubehebe Crater 4 stars
Travel Tip: Death Valley

Not far from Scotty’s Castle is Ubehebe Crater. It’s called an explosion crater as hot magma rose from the centre of the earth, met groundwater and the resultant steam blasted out a crater. One look, when I got there and I knew why!

It’s a plain trail from the car park up to...

Ok, ok, so a “castle” in the desert would be a bit far fetched and more like something out of a Stephen King novel. Instead, I discovered a very picturesque Mediterranean hacienda (mansion!) in the northern part of the park, which just happens to be DV’s premier tourist attraction.

I’d strongly recommend that your first port of call if you’re visiting DV is Furnace Creek, which is the headquarters of the Death Valley National Park. As its name suggests, it’s the real hot spot with temperatures soaring to 52°C in the summer. The Visitor’s Centre explained the... [more]

Just south of Furnace Creek is the 9 mile loop of the Artist’s Drive which is an easy must see attraction for any visitors to Death Valley. There aren't a lot of trees or vegetation to be seen here so Mother Nature makes up for it with the multicoloured rock formations. Swathes of pink, green,... [more]

Salt Creek 3 stars

Salt Creek is the home of the Death Valley pupfish which are found nowhere else on Earth, yet somehow these little fish have made some amazing adaptations to survive in this harsh landscape. There’s a boardwalk trail built by the park service alongside the creek to view the fish, as the water... [more]

Badwater 3 stars
Travel Tip: Death Valley

Judging by its name and location, you just know it’s going to be extreme. The salt pond is 282 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the USA, with the regular summer temperatures hitting 49°C.

I guess Badwater is mostly a curiosity, and not that much hotter (except for...
