Exploring the Old Port region
The Vieux Port ( or Old Port) is the centre of the lively Marseille and where works the traditional fish market, with great variety of Mediterranean seafood. The Port is surrounded by the major attractions of Marseille: Fort St. Jean in the north, Fort St. Nicolas in the south and Theatre National de la Criee. Besides this, is in the region of the Port where the best restaurants, bars and cafes are. Nearby the Vieux Port is also La Panier neighbourhood, in a high part of the city with tiny steep streets and old houses, which used to receive the immigrants. Nowadays, the place attracts a large number of tourists. It is not in vain. Walking along La Panier is really very interesting and hides great surprises and views. [more] |

The Old Port
The place is lined with boats for fishing and enjoyment (think yachts). If you want to buy fish they have a great fish market that is open every morning. Even if you aren’t into eating fish, it is still an interesting place to visit. There are many nice outdoor cafes here that are great for watching the shore while having the chance to see the interesting people walking by. Has anyone noticed the French are skinnier? Try going into the shops in this area, you might notice that you are actually a medium and not a small by the French standards. Go north of the port and you can see the really nice Garden of Ruins. Here are the remains of the original Greek docks as well as many various walls, towers and even a really old drainage system. The whole area has been deemed an archaeological park and contains many photo worthy places. This is especially true since most of the stone used here is considered even 2000 years old making these some of the oldest standing structures in the city.
