Belgium - Travel Guide

Introduction  |  Travel infos

Belgium is the symbol for the European Unification – the heart of Europe.

Four cities should not be missed by Belgium travelers:  Brussels, Bruges, Gent, and Antwerp.

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, the capital of the French Alliance in Belgium and the Flemish Alliance, as well as the seat of the Institutions of the European Union.  The city attracts with one of the smallest icons in the world:  the “Manneken Pis”.  Impressive is also the Grand Place Brussels, made a world heritage site by UNESCO.  With its gothic town hall and the Maison du Roi, the Plaza is framed in beautifully.  A tour of the Atomium, particularly when traveling with children, is fun and interesting.

A journey in time, back to medieval days, is what travelers experience in Bruges.  Venice of the North, as it is called because of its many channels.  The charm of the city is made by its historic houses and narrow streets.  Worth seeing is the Grote Markt (Grand Market) and the Burg Platz (Castle Plaza).  Those seeking peace and quiet should visit the impressive Bruges Beginenhof (the vineyard).

Antwerp is the cultural and economic metro capital of Belgium.  A must-see is the Jewish District, which is the largest Jewish community of Europe.  The Jewish District is also the diamond district.  The “Diamond Street” is the “Pelikanstraat”, which winds through the district.

Further sights to visit are the town hall, a exceptional example of Brabant Renaissance; the Steenplein, a stone castle on the Schelde River which houses the National Maritime Museum today, and the “Liebfrauen Cathedral”, the tallest church in all Benelux countries.

Gent is the symbol of science and culture.  Its best known sight is the Library Tower.  The “Freitagsmarkt” (Friday Market) is a picturesque plaza in the center of Gent, surrounded by old guild houses.  It received its name by the market taking place here each Friday.

Worth a visit as well is Leuven.  It is the oldest and largest university town in Belgium.  The city’s image is dominated by its famous town hall, one of the most magnificent buildings of late gothic style in Europe.

Mecheln is the spiritual center of the country and a world center for the Glockenspiel (bell chimes).  The Sint-Romboutskathedraal” with its bell tower is the eye-catcher of the city.  During the summer, two bell chimes are played each Monday after 8:30 pm.

For technical enthusiasts and those who aren’t, the boat working docks at the Canal du Centre in the province of Hainault are an interesting alternative to visit.

The castle of Raeren, a square defense tower, shows the imposing building style of the 14th century.

The national park “Hohes Venn” with its marsh and moorland is a fantastic place to hike and bicycle.

Along the coast of Belgium, water sports such as sailing and surfing are popular.  The beaches invite visitors to sun bathing.
