Where to go in Budapest - Jewish Synagogue (Dohány utcai zsinagóga)
Another tourist attraction to go to while snooping around Budapest is the Jewish synagogue (Dohany Utcai Zsinagoga); a very old and quite big synagogue; I believe it is actually the largest actively working synagogue in Europe; In Summer, you will usually find a couple of big posters for Jewish summer camp and such. Here, at the synagogue’s garden, you will see plenty of names written on stones looking like parts of somebody else’s graves; those stones are actually the Jewish Martyrs Memorial. At the back area of the synagogue, you will find this tree-shaped art made of iron which is pretty unique though I wouldn’t know what it represents exactly. [more] |

Wallenberg Memorial Garden
One who really has been to the Synagogue in Budapest would definitely mention about this memorial garden because touring inside synagogue itself is a one package deal, museum, memorial garden, and the synagogue; so before I forget more of my tour at the biggest Jewish synagogue in the whole Europe, let me describe you more of this memorial garden. In the beginning I did not really know that the metal tree shown on the picture below is called Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Garden Weeping Willow Sculpture; located on the back side of the synagogue, when you are heading to the Jewish Museum, you definitely will see this metal tree sculpture. This memorial garden is to honor Raoul Wallenber, the Swedish diplomat who saved a lot of lives of Jewish people (I think I have mentioned about this in one of my Montreal reviews – I think!) in old days. This metal tree is quite unique and actually it has names written all over the tree. I am not too sure if you are actually allowed to touch it but I did see couple of kids did although then their parents would run to get them. [more] |
