Xel-Ha Eco-Park

Xel-Ha is about 69± miles from Cancun. Most hotels have tours to the area. It is an eco-park comprising some 208 acres of which 34± acres is water. This area is part of the Riviera Maya and is noted for its cenotes (sinkholes) which are in evidence at the park. The park has a variety of activities available including tubing down a river, snorkeling, feeding the fish and even swimming with dolphins (for an additional fee). The water is crystal clear and has more than 90 species living here. I rented snorkels and fins and swam around a bit. The clarity of the water was great. There are some hammocks or lounge chairs available for those who want to relax on the beaches. For snacks or lunches there are several restaurants available. Arrangements can be made on-line at
The weather in the area can be really hot. Sunscreen, a hat and drinking water are essential to enjoy the amenities. The rainy season runs from May-November. The dry season is usually December through April. [more ]

Really Royal Solaris Cancun

Flying down to Mexico I headed for the Yucatan Peninsula state of Quintana Roo. Located along the north coast of the Caribbean Sea in the area known as the Riviera Maya this is a favorite tourist haunt. This area encompasses jungles, beautiful beaches and archaeological sites. It is a great place to go exploring while on vacation. There are many types of accommodations in the area, from posh resorts to budget motels. Many places offer all-inclusive packages which really aren't a bad deal. I had selected a mid-range hotel (Royal Solaris Cancun formerly Royal Solaris Caribe), in Cancun along the tourist strip on Kukulcan Boulevard. The atmosphere at this place was relaxed in the morning, picking up greatly by about 11 am and then going full swing until late at night. The restaurants were good, although I wasn't that keen on the poolside offerings. The bars are nice and quite busy. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Although it was an all-inclusive hotel, tours were not part of the package. However, when I wanted to go sight-seeing I was able to make my arrangements through the hotel's tour desk. [more ]
