The Elephant House, Edinburgh

4.0 stars

Made Famous by J.K. Rowling

The Elephant House earned a reputation first as a cheap eatery for university students at nearby Edinburgh University, but it has since become famous as the site where J. K. Rowling began work on the first Harry Potter novel. This cafe is usually crowded, and finding a table can be difficult at the best of times. The food is not great, but it's a good deal for the price (£5 will easily buy your lunch, which is not an easy feat in the centre of Edinburgh's Old Town). There are large tables at the back with a view over the city and, if you strain a bit, a view of the famous castle itself. This is also a popular spot for a late-night drink, though you will find it just as crowded in the evenings as during the day. If you are in Edinburgh and on a budget, give the Elephant House a try. the Elephant House

One almost expects a young boy with green eyes and a scar on the forehead to sit at one of the small tables in the red interior of Elephant House, the "birthplace" of Harry Potter.
21, George 4th Bridge, Edinburgh not Hogwarts is said to be the place Mrs Rowling has composed the best-seller of the "boy who lived". Even if you don't have a drink or bretzel, have a look inside and feel the magic atmosphere! [more ]
