True Tapas in Edinburgh
Good tapas is often hard to find. Much that passes under that name doesn't really qualify to be called tapas. As one who used to live in Sevilla, I know what I'm talking about. But Barioja in Edinburgh was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant seems small when you first walk in, but the few tables in the bar area on the main floor are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There is a much larger seating area downstairs, with plenty of room for large parties, which is, of course, what tapas is all about: sharing! Tapas prices range from £3-£6, but the portion sizes are large (for tapas). You can also order paella for two. The wine selection is good, though a bit overpriced. If you go with a group, it's best to order around 3 dishes each and share; you will find you have more than enough food this way. I especially recommend the chorizo in cider marinade; it was a wonderful Scottish twist on a classic Spanish favourite. The staff are friendly and attentive, but when it gets busy, wait times can be long. The music selection, however, helps to while away the time. I've actually bought several albums after hearing them played in Barioja! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something a bit different in Edinburgh. [more] |
