Thai Food in St. Andrews
St. Andrews is saturated with restaurants of mediocre quality, but in this environment Nahm Jim stands above the rest. This is a family-run Thai restaurant with excellent food. Prices are reasonable (about £15 per person for dinner, excluding drinks) and the selection on the menu is quite extensive. The cocktail menu is well worth sampling, with some interesting and exotic creations. A particular favourite of mine is the Raspberry Sake-tini.
Unfortunately, Nahm Jim has recently moved from it's former premises in Crail's Lane and is now located above L'Orient, another restaurant venture in Japanese cuisine undertaken by Sandy and Bee, the owners of Nahm Jim. The quality of the atmosphere, the food, and even the service has gone downhill slightly since the move, but Nahm Jim is still by far the best food for the price in St. Andrews. The new premises are slightly more cramped, and the noise level in the restaurant often makes it hard to hear the conversation of your dining partners. The decor is striking, with deep red walls and dark wooden carvings imported from Thailand. The staff seems to be unhappy about the move, and it shows in the service they offer to customers. Nevertheless, the food makes up for the shortcomings in atmosphere and service.
Nahm Jim is now only open in the evenings, from 6-11.30pm. [more ]
