Traditional Meets Modern
The West Port is a popular destination among St. Andrews University students as well as certain segments of the local population. Undoubtedly this is because they know a good thing when the see it. The West Port is a modern twist on the traditional pub, offering a fair selection of beers, a good selection of liquors, and a very good selection of wines.
Food is also served from noon till 9pm, and the menu offers a wide variety to choose from, everything from your traditional fry-up to standard pub fare (they do a good sausage and mash) to slightly modified old classics (their lamb burger is also quite nice). Lunches start at £3.95 for a cup of soup and half a sandwich, and main courses run from £5.95 up to £12.95. The food is very good, not great, but the portion sizes are generous, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the prices are right! You will find this quite a crowded venue in the evening on weekends, but it is perfect for a late Sunday lunch or a weekday meal.
In fine weather, the pub also offers a large beer garden which has been recently renovated and provides ample opportunity to enjoy the sun when it does come out. This has been a favourite haunt of mine for the past several years and I never fail to meet someone interesting whenever I go. [more ]
