Anstruther Fish Bar

4.0 stars

The Best Fish and Chips in Scotland?

This is a contentious title; nearly every Scottish person you meet will have their own strong opinion about where to get the best fish and chips in the country. But the Anstruther Fish Bar is certainly right up there at the top. The atmosphere is something of a cross between a train station waiting room and a McDonalds, but the food more than makes up for it. There are always several daily specials on offer, and you can get an enormous meal for about £8. The Hake, when it is available, is wonderful. The salmon cakes are another favourite of mine. Every meal is served with bread and butter, fish, chips, salad, and a drink (non-alcoholic, although you can order beer or wine as well if you so desire). The service is fantastic, even when the line stretches out the door and down the street, as it often does in the summer months.

This restaurant has won numerous awards, including Scotland's Fish and Chip Shop of the Year for 2005, 2006, an 2007. Is it still the best in Scotland? The fact that people are willing to wait in line for over an hour just to get a seat testifies to its merit. But you'll have to go and decide for yourself! [more ]

UK fish and chip winner in the countryside Scotland

I loved Anstruther Fish Bar, in Anstruther, a small town in the Scottish region of Fife, about 9 miles of St. Andrews. I have been there only few times, but enough to eat a quality food with affordable prices. Anstruther Fish Bar has awarded many prizes, including the Seafish Fish & Chip Shop of the Year 2008/09 (UK winner) and in the past years, has been attracting tourists (it is a golf region) and local people, who come to enjoy the award-winning fish and chips or the other seafood options. The restaurant and takeaway is small and simple, with iron and plastic chairs and tables, but normally has queue. Indeed the food is delicious. They prepare the fresh fish in an open kitchen where everybody can appreciate all the process. However, the most interesting, in my opinion, is ‘Catch of the Day’ board which the owners provide information about the fresh fishes of the day as well as where and who has fished them. [more ]
