Carib 5
Carib 5 is the largest and most popular movie theatre in Jamaica. Located in Cross Roads, it was previously the Carib Cinema before a fire destroyed most of the property. A larger building was constructed containing five cinemas, hence the name Carib 5. Jamaicans love going to the movies and Carib is usually the cinema of choice as they offer a larger variety of films. Being so close to the United States, the movies shown are usually very current and on par with cinemas in the US. Many times the movies will have the same opening dates as they do in American cinemas. Going to the movies is a big event for many Jamaicans, so on weekends it’s very common for people (women especially) to look as if they are going to a party. Dresses, peeped toe pumps, the latest fashion trends and Heavy accessories, you name it they wear it. It’s very in to be seen at the movies but don’t worry, if you wear a simple jeans and T-shirt you won’t feel out of place. At the snack counters the variety is not limited to popcorn, so it’s possible to have a fill while watching a movie. There is usually a choice of nachos, hot dogs, donuts, chicken nuggets, pizza, various sweets, juices and coffee. The movie breaks so you can get food but it’s advisable to buy before the movie to avoid the lines, especially when a popular movie is being shown. Another heads up about going to the movies in Jamaica is that the national anthem is played at the start of every movie. So don’t be surprised when you hear the announcement. After the anthem, there are commercials, then previews of movies that will be opened soon, all of this usually takes about 15 minutes before the feature film commences. Carib 5 is opened 365 days per year including holidays. Movie times are usually 5pm and 8pm everyday and on Saturdays and Sundays there are sometimes 3pm matinees, usually for children. The best time to go to the movies is during the week as it’s less crowded except on Tuesdays. On Tuesdays the 5pm movie is two for the price of one, so it’s very popular. You can purchase tickets in advance to ensure that the movie isn’t sold out. Tickets are currently JA$480 (under 5 euros) and a cheaper rate for children and students.
