Grote Markt
I have always loved town squares and usually make time to sit down for a drink and watch all the people come and go. In Grote Markt the surrounding buildings were also nice to look at and the lavish designs of the guild houses gives you an idea of how much wealth and power these organisations must have had in their day. We took some nice photos at the Brabo fountain which tells the legend of how the city got its name. The statue shows the soldier Brabo who killed the giant that terrorized the city. Afterwards Brabo cut off the giant´s hand and threw it into the water, and the Flemish word handwerpen (throwing the hand) became Antwerpen! [more] |

Antwerpen market square
Antwerpen main square (Grote Markt) is one of the nicest squares I have ever encountered. The big pedestrian square is dominated by the very high tower of the nearby cathedral and the beautiful facade of the town hall, decorated with flags from all over the world. Around the square, just like in Brussels, there are the buildings housing the different guilds in the town's past. The fountain in the middle is a monument to the legendary hero, founder of the city, throwing the hand of the giant that he defeated. [more] |

Grote Markt
Antwerp has a lovely main square, just like Brussels. Actually, the squares are pretty different, but they are nevertheless equally beautiful and impressive. The Grote Markt of Antwerp is somehow more open than the one in Brussels, which is completely surrounded by buildings that make it look somehow like a large room. The Antwerp main square has therefore a slightly different atmosphere. This one is also packed with tourists, most of them admiring the main highlights of this place, the Brabo fountain and the City Hall. It was nice being there and we luckily had a sunny day, so the cold weather was not present to ruin our sightseeing plans. [more] |
