Abalon Hotel (not so) ideal
We stayed at the Abalon hotel during a summer trip to Stuttgart in 2008. We booked the hotel based on its good location and price and the pictures on the website showed a modern and seemingly friendly service.
Actually, on arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by a member of staff and shown to our room fairly quickly. She was polite and helpful but I didn't get the overall impression that she was a particularly enthusiastic person which wasn't the most welcoming of greetings.
The main entrance to the hotel is on the ground floor but since it is built on the side of a hill, it's still possible to take the elevator down three storeys, which is where our room was located. I didn't particularly like this since it meant that our room was trapped away from the sun just above the underground car-park and shadowed by a taller building opposite. It made the room feel damp and dark but this was probably more a feeling than a reality.
The room was clean although not the cleanist I have seen on my travels since the rug had a bit of a stain on it. There was however a nice tall wardrobe with mirror, the bed was large and so was the colour TV. The bathroom was small and the window in there was perculiar because it faced into the interior corridoor. When it was open it was possible to hear other hotel guests in the corridoor which isn't so great when you want to go to the toilet! Although the room was not ideal for my needs it was tasteful and had a nice modern touch such as wooden flooring, colourful shower curtain and rug.
I am somewhat critical of the room but I was very impressed with the breakfast. There was an endless supply of juices, yoghurts, cereals, breads, croissants, marmalades and so on. We were able to help ourselves to whatever we fancied and it was possible to sit out in the conservatory, which was a lovely little suntrap. I would recommend the Abalon Hotel ideal for fellow young travellers, but would warn to expect that it is a bit "hit and miss" with the rooms. Had ours have been on the upper floors with more light and fresh air, it would definitely have been harder to criticise. [more]
