Meninger City Hostel & Hotel It's out there. The second to last stop on the U1 (Keplerplatz). The staff has an attitude that would make even the most Parisian of Parisians flinch. And everything extra--from Internet to breakfast--costs an arm and a leg. However, Meninger is good in a pinch for a hostel with hotel amenities. It is incredibly safe and clean (with linens included) and our room was actually a delight to come home to each night (even if it seemed to spin after a few too many Stiegls). Ignore the staff as best you can; you won't need them for much more than checking out or in. Grab breakfast from one of Vienna's ubiquitous bakeries or kafe/konditorei and save yourself the extra Euro for stale toast and Corn Flakes. If you absolutely must use the Internet, find a cafe towards the city center. The location, while far out, is actually more convenient than most people give it credit for. The U1 runs through Stephensplatz, which means it's only one line to get from the city center to your crash pad. It's a quick ride, and Keplerplatz is just a block away from Columbusgasse, where the hotel is located. It can get a bit dodgy at night (there are quite a few erotic/strip clubs in the area), but the area is still incredibly well lit and it's just a short walk to get home. Vienna is not the cheapest city for hostelers, and this is a great alternative, especially if you need a little comfort with your cheap digs. [more]
