The castle here in Cartagena is located at the top of a hill, Concepción Hill. Locals call it "Ducks Castle" as there is a small pond here that used to have ducks on it, although the second time we went the ducks had flown the coop, much to my son´s disappointment. Well, he ate the bread anyway. The caslte grounds are lovely, and you can either walk up to the castle through the gardens, or walk around to the side of the hill where you will find the "Ascensor Panoramico" or the tower lift. This is an excellent way to get to the top, essential if you have kids! The lift takes you up the tower to the top of the hill. The view is over the habour and the neighbouring bull ring. My boys love this, and it only costs a few euros for the whole family. At the top are lovely grounds, a viewpoint with cannons, gardens full of wandering peacocks, and seating. You can either pay to go in the castle, or simply enjoy the view over the adjacent Roman Ampitheatre.. The castle is fantastic too, and if you get a ticket for several attractions at the ticket office, the entrance fees are not too bad. If you are here for a week with time to visit all the attractions, well worth it. [more] |
