The Other Coliseum

After a few hours driving, we arrived at El Djem around sunset. I hadn’t expected it to be so BIG—we climbed the walls and looked down into the arena, and then wandered out into the centre of the arena itself and tried to imagine what it must have been like to look up at a stadium full of people during your final terrifying moments on earth. We went down under the floor and saw the tunnels that were used to bring people and animals up to the arena floor. The whole thing was made of yellow stone, and was very impressive. It’s well worth a visit. If you have an ISIC card, you can get in for a discounted price, although getting them to accept other forms of student ID is difficult. There are periodically outdoor concerts held here throughout the year, and the Coliseum makes a great venue if you can get a ticket. El Djem is a long day trip from Tunis, and it’s much better to see it as part of a 3-day circuit of the country. [more ]
